The Power of Filial Piety: A Lesson from Dr. Lao

On October 7 and 9, during our chapel sessions, Dr. Lao delivered a heartfelt talk about the virtue of filial piety (孝敬父母)—a deeply rooted value in both Chinese culture and our own core belief of respect.

Filial piety, the virtue of honoring one’s parents, is not just a cultural cornerstone, but also the first commandment with a promise in the Bible. Dr. Lao shared his personal story of witnessing his mother’s relentless dedication. She worked day and night, tirelessly providing for her family while sacrificing her own needs. Dr. Lao recalls how, as a child, he never saw his mother sleep. She was always working—embroidering, cooking, and putting her children first. It wasn’t until one day when he heard a loud snoring sound that he realized his mother, at last, was resting, but even then, it was during a rare midday nap.

As he reflected on his mother’s sacrifices, he recognized the little things he wished he could have done—saving her some food at meals, spending more time with her, or simply showing more appreciation. Now, with his mother no longer around, Dr. Lao expressed his deep regret for not being able to do more for her.

His message to students was clear: cherish the moments with your parents now. Show them love, gratitude, and respect before it’s too late. He urged everyone to practice filial piety—be present, be kind, and honor your parents while you still have the chance.

Dr. Lao’s story serves as a powerful reminder: while success and achievements are important, the way we treat our parents and loved ones defines who we are. Respect starts at home.
